If the withdrawal of Canal+ channels from DTT should not have too much impact on the financing of cinema and audiovisual, the Vivendi subsidiary is considering switching to another regime and this could allow it to reduce its level of contribution .
Canal+ is in full development, between its IPO and its withdrawal from DTT, the Vivendi subsidiary is evaluating all its options. The president of Arcom Roch-Olivier Maistre thus indicated that Canal+ “was currently considering being contracted under the cabsat regime” for its four channels removed from TNT.
A change which would be of some importance: in fact, within the framework of the Agreement signed with Arcom on February 15, 2023 allowing it to broadcast in TNT, Canal+ is defined as “ a multi-programming first-run cinema service (…) composed of eight programs”, including Canal+ Sport and Canal+ Cinema. “ Programming (of these) consists of the rebroadcast, in whole or in part, of the main program », limiting to one third the share of specific programs that they can offer.
But within the framework of new cabsat agreements, the limitation would no longer apply and the production contribution obligations will no longer necessarily relate to the service. Thus, if Canal+ Sport were the subject of a specific calculation, it would escape contribution obligations to cinema and probably to audiovisual production, subject to certain reservations. Thus, the idea of empowering Canal+ Sport could weigh in the negotiations around the basis applicable to Canal+’s obligations, the agreement expiring at the end of the year. Canal could therefore seek to reduce its contributions (190 million euros per year on average).
