Created in 1964, television in Guadeloupe is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. 60 years of eventful history which originally aimed to promote state policy overseas, through the broadcast of programs from the only national television channel. Over time, “télé Guadeloupe” has established itself and distanced itself from political power to become a public service channel of France Télévisions, with integrity and independence, serving viewers. Guadeloupe la 1ère will be present on radio, TV, web and social networks for a superb birthday on December 21 and 22.
1964 – 2024, next weekend, December 21 and 22, 2024, Guadeloupe la 1ère will celebrate 60 years of television in Guadeloupe. An important page of history for Guadeloupeans because television is part of their daily life. From the beginning of the 1960s, the debate around the establishment of television in the Antilles-Guyana and more generally in overseas territories fueled discussions. At the time, it was mainly political actors who were at the heart of the discussions.
The project was launched in Paris by General de Gaulle and his government led by Georges Pompidou. The departmental elected officials of the time were consulted and had to express themselves on the relevance of the arrival of the ORTF in our territories. The objective is above all to promote state policy overseas. In 1964, the decision was made and the ORTF (French radio and television office) arrived in Guadeloupe. Television thus joins radio, which had already been present for several years and whose headquarters was then located in Basse-Terre.
How far we’ve come since. ORTF became FR3 Guadeloupe in 1974, then RFO in 1982 and finally Guadeloupe la 1ère more recently with its integration into France Télévisions.
