The Desperate Housewives could soon return

The badass inhabitants of Wisteria Lane profoundly changed television twenty years ago, in 2004. And the creator of Desperate HousewivesMarc Cherry, is clearly not short of ideas to bring them back into our lives.

Susan Mayer, Lynette Scavo, Gabrielle Solis and Bree Van de Kamp: four iconic names in television, who made the heyday of Desperate Housewives since 2004, for 8 colorful seasons. But the cult series, whose credits remain a masterclass of the small screen, has not yet said its last word: its creator, Marc Cherry, could well bring back our beloved housewives, in another form.

A key character: Wisteria Lane

In an interview with the American media People, the showrunner of Desperate Housewives thus confided his desire to offer himself a reboot to his beloved series, while he estimates that more than “70,000 people” have already asked him for a sequel. But what could this new production be about?

Marc Cherry is not short of ideas, but above all envisages a surprising turn: shifting the plot from our modern era, to set it in the 1960s, like in 1966 for example. This would allow the creator to Desperate Housewives to continue developing the story of his favorite character: the Wisteria Lane neighborhood.

“It’s the one I miss the most, in terms of writing”tells Marc Cherry to People. “It was the most fun playground in the history of television, because we owned the whole street. I know her like the back of my hand. »

The showrunner therefore dreams of returning to these places and “redo the series, once again” : “I think if I ever had the chance to do it all over again, I would be even better at my role. I have learned so much since then. »

“The casting gods were on my side”

If it came to fruition, this idea of reboot would necessarily imply that the original cast, notably composed of Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher, would not return, since their characters did not yet exist in 1966.

Marc Cherry also tells People that he « adore ce casting » : “I cherish these people, and every time we meet by chance, we resume our discussions as if we had never left each other. I am grateful to them. You can write a great script, but unless the right actors are there to say your words correctly, it makes no difference. (…) With this series, the casting gods were on my side. »

The showrunner still remembers that at the time, he had to fight with ABC, the channel which broadcast Desperate Housewivesto impose your project: “I had to demonstrate to them, before they ordered the series, how I could combine a dramatic plot with suspense and comedy. It was the tour de force of the series, to mix three genres at the same time. »

However, we should not wait for this project to reboot of Desperate Housewives for a while: this is a simple idea, suggested by the creator of the series, without it having been validated by a channel or streaming platform, for the moment. Marc Cherry also admits that he will first have to think about the story and ask himself “if there are always things to say” in this universe: “If you're doing a reboot, you really have to have a good artistic reason to do it. » Phew.
