On October 30, 2024, during a question session with the government, Thomas Portes, deputy for La France Insoumise (LFI), was caught in a verbal altercation with members of the National Rally (RN). The climate was already tense, because Nathalie Oziol, her group colleague, asked a question about the situation in the Middle East, and several RN deputies, including Laurent Jacobelli, attacked the LFI deputies, describing them in particular as “spokespeople of Hamas.”
In response to these attacks, Thomas Portes lost his calm and reacted violently: “Shut up, you!” We’ll take care of you. » Threatening and insulting remarks, and an immediate sanction from the office of the National Assembly which has just fallen.
A call to order and a reduction in his parliamentary allowance
Following this incident, the office of the National Assembly, composed of vice-presidents, quaestors, secretaries and chaired by Yaël Braun-Pivet, opened a procedure to examine the behavior of the LFI deputy. After hearing him, the members of the office decided to give him a “call to order with entry in the minutes”. Concretely, this means that the incident is officially recorded and sanctioned, but without too severe consequences. In addition to this rather symbolic reprimand, a fine was imposed: Thomas Portes will lose 25% of his parliamentary allowance for one month, or a loss of 1,482.99 euros.
Yaël Braun-Pivet strongly condemned the MP’s comments, stressing that “insults and threats have no place in the hemicycle of the National Assembly”. She insisted on the fact that deputies have a duty to set an example and must be worthy of the mandate entrusted to them by the French. This is not the first time that Thomas Portes has been sanctioned for this type of behavior.
