With 12 seasons, The Big Bang Theory is one of the most popular sitcoms of recent years. It’s so true that it gave rise to a spin-off based on the character of Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons): Young Sheldon. But other characters have left their mark on our screens, our minds and our hearts: those of Penny Teller (played by Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard Hofstadter (played by Johnny Galecki).
An iconic duo
In the series, we see the formation an unexpected couple between Leonardthe scientist fan of video games and comics, and Pennythe beautiful and naive girl who dreams of fame. You probably already know this, but this couple also formed in real lifeduring the second season, shortly before the characters’ relationship begins. Everyone testifies to having quickly felt a a certain attraction to each other, and an alchemy impossible to ignore.
The two actors initially tried to keep their relationship a secret, and dated for almost two yearsbefore suddenly separating. Very professionally, they remained very close, and considered each other friends. They say they did their best to ensure their breakup didn’t taint their characters’ relationship. They also suspected Chuck Lorre, the producer of the series, of having deliberately added intimate scenes between Penny and Leonard following their separation simply to annoy them – which the latter denied.
The “Tuna-Gate”
In the book The Big Bang Theory : The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series by Jessica Radloff, an interview with Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki traces the history of their relationship. Kaley says they were “on the same wavelength 99.9% of the time, except during their one argument”. This argument took place on the set, one day during which the actor decided to eat tuna as he repeated his text. Already Annoyed by her colleague’s lateness, Kaley couldn’t stand the smell of fish :
I can’t do this scene with you. It’s disgusting. Go eat somewhere else and come back” […] I’m not going to work with tuna head today. I can’t.
Angry, the two then left the set. The actress now recognizes the ridiculousness of this story, and says that they nicknamed it the “Tuna-Gate” (in reference to the Watergate scandal). Derisory, this anecdote clearly shows all the extent of the friendship of the two celebrities, which is still relevant today. The series, for its part, is available on the Max platform.
