After the colossal success of the Korean series Squid Game on Netflix in 2021, season 2 arrives next December. The opportunity for Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of the series, to indicate the reason which pushed him to agree to return.

Squid Game took everything in its path when it was broadcast on the Netflix streaming platform in 2021. The South Korean series features a group of people in debt, who risk their lives in a mysterious survival game whose reward is a large sum of money money. At the time, Squid Game had achieved the best start in the history of the platform, with a total of 111 million views in 27 days. While season 2 is due to be released on December 26, the series will end in 2025 with a final salvo. Originally, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director and creator of this innovative series, only had one season in mind. However, despite the stress generated during the filming of the first season, he was able to be convinced to continue the adventure. The reason? He gave it bluntly to the BBC, who came to meet him on the set of this second season so awaited by fans and it is astonishing. He, in fact, revealed that he had agreed to produce season 2 of Squid Game pour “money”.

The creator, who gave clues about the plot of these new episodes, explained why he agreed to do it “for the money”. “Even though the first series was a huge worldwide success, honestly, I didn’t win much.”he revealed, since he only received a modest initial sum despite the some 650 million pounds sterling (782 million euros) that the American giant would have earned with the series. “Doing the second season will therefore allow me to compensate for the success of the first”he added, before, nevertheless, indicating: “And I hadn’t completely finished the story.” Netflix’s biggest success to date, Squid Game has propelled South Korea and its fictions into the spotlight around the world.

If he revealed the reasons which pushed him to agree to continue the adventure Squid GameHwang Dong-hyuk said he felt stressed a few weeks before season 2 went online.
