Winter is knocking at the door, and many Canal + subscribers, avid viewers of biathlon, Nordic skiing and alpine skiing – but also tennis and even cycling – are worried about no longer being able to follow their Favorite discipline(s) on Eurosport in the coming weeks.
For a month in fact, an announcement as laconic as it is explicit on the Canal + website informs Internet users of the fact that, as of Thursday, November 14, Canal + will no longer distribute the Eurosport channels (Warner Bros. Discovery) in its bouquets. …
Why such a brutal decision and so few explanations? It seems that the Warner Bros. group. Discovery wants to change the way it broadcasts sports, relying more on its Max streaming service. Ultimately, Warner Bros. Discovery could disconnect traditional linear Eurosport channels in favor of Max Sport channels.
But this does not necessarily mean that Canal + and Eurosport will be in separate rooms from now on. Indeed, Max is integrated free of charge into several Canal offers, including all cinema offers. However, Max offers in all its subscription plans, including the cheapest with advertisements, a paid “Sport” option at 5 euros per month.
Feverishly awaiting the date of November 14, and cautious about the additional costs attributable to the new situation, certain Canal + subscribers, attached to Eurosport, are expressing many of their feelings, the range of which ranges from concern to angry for a month.
“I don’t understand how such channels can be removed from Canal offers”
“I am very disappointed that C + is abandoning the distribution of Eurosport,” writes Jano on the forum for subscribers to the encrypted channel. To find Eurosport 1 & 2, I now have to take MAX: €5.99 + Sport option at €5 = €10.99! There’s no way I’m spending this extra amount every month. And I’ll see if I renew C+ when due…”
Luis, a “major consumer of Eurosport for tennis”, writes that he has his finger on the button: “My termination was recorded for December 31. I don’t understand how such channels can be removed from Canal offers. This is a big strategic mistake. For a resubscription/reengagement or not, I’m waiting to see what the situation will be in mid-November…”
“Our discussions with Canal + are continuing,” assures Eurosport
For his part, Cyrus does not hide his despondency. “It’s a very sad 40th anniversary for Canal +. Frankly, it sucks, we’re all wondering when we’re going to cancel… Sad Christmas holidays for television. I will call to renegotiate the price otherwise cancellation guaranteed! » Cyrus even believes he knows that Canal + subscribers would regain their contractual freedom if necessary: “In the event of the disappearance of a major channel like Eurosport, termination is possible for reasons of non-compliance with the contract, which I will do with bank opposition …”
Asked by us, Eurosport wants to be reassuring this Wednesday: “Our discussions with Canal + are continuing to find a fair agreement so that its subscribers continue to receive the premium Eurosport sports channels currently included in their subscriptions,” said Eurosport in a brief press release. Also requested, Canal + for its part did not wish to provide any comment. Discussions between the two groups are still ongoing. But for sports fans, time is running out.
