Season 4 of The Boys is in full swing, and many questions still remain unanswered. If we already know that a fifth round of episodes is in preparation, we should not count on the comics to give us clues about the rest of the plot: the series has adopted a radically different approach from the original comics, and many narrative arcs – like the relationship between Soldier Boy and Homelander in season 3 for example – are simply not relevant. A big gap which sometimes leads to some misunderstandings.
The explanation behind Mother Milk
Concerning the character of Marvin T. Milk in particular, it is difficult to understand why the character inherits the nickname Mother Milk (La Crème in VF) just by having seen the series. The explanation actually comes from the character’s backstory in the comics. In Garth Ennis’ comic strip, Marvin’s mother worked at Vought while she was pregnant with him. We can quickly guess what happens next. Exposed to Compound V even before his birth, the character was granted superhuman strength that was very useful during his various missions with Butcher’s gang.
However, MM’s gift also suffers from a huge downside: in the comics, to survive and maintain his extraordinary physical abilities, La Crème is forced to drink her mother’s breast milk regularly, even as an adult. It is from this situation that the character inherited her nickname Mother Milk. Remember that in the Amazon Prime Video series, the character does not have superpowers. His mother is simply never mentioned in the episodes, and the story prefers to focus on his role as patriarch, first within his family with his daughter and his ex-wife, then within the family. The Boys team, for whom he will try to play the role of leader that Butcher never knew how to occupy.
If Eric Kripke chose not to stage this aspect of the story of Mother Milk, the showrunner of the series has obviously decided not to completely abandon the idea of milk. In the series, Homelander maintains an almost incestuous relationship with Madelyn Stillwell throughout season 1. In addition to the sexual tension that exists between the two characters, the Vice President of Vought goes so far as to breastfeed the leader of the Seven. Homelander’s obsession with milk continues until season 3, before his first meeting with Victoria Neuman.
