Disappeared in 1996 without seeing the publication of her cult book, “The Art of Joy”, the Sicilian actress and author Goliarda Sapienza is today an icon. For twenty years, publisher Frédéric Martin and translator Nathalie Castagné have worked to make his unique legacy known.

In 2024, the centenary of her birth, the Italian author and actress Goliarda Sapienza is everywhere: in a documentary on Arte, in a book by her latest companion Angelo Pellegrino (“Goliarda”, ed. Le Tripode), as well as in a biographical study of its translator, “Lives, deaths and rebirths of Goliarda Sapienza” published by Seuil.

For nearly twenty years, “The Art of Joy” has been one of the most cult novels of our time, constantly reprinted and celebrated. This is the major work of Goliarda Sapienza, who died in 1996, without having had the joy of seeing her book published. The discovery and posthumous rebirth of this text are due to an editor, Frédéric Martin, and a translator, Nathalie Castagné, who worked on all of the Sicilian author’s writings.
