During his interview with GQNava Mau revealed to be at peace with the conclusion of Teri’s story, as she played it out on set. And for good reason, a sequence deleted during editing revealed that her story with Donny ended well: “There was actually an added element of Teri and Donny’s relationship in the script, and the scene was shot. Teri leaves a voicemail for Donny five months later.” The actress, who is transgender herself, was excited that the deleted scene resulted in a positive ending to a transgender television characteralthough it was not shown on screen: “That’s what brought me so much comfort, knowing that they found peace in their relationship. Teri had her happy ending, you know?” She adds that Teri met a new lover, is still in touch with her friends and has kept her job. “And I think that’s remarkable, because, so often, we’ve seen stories of trans people who end up broken,” she concluded.

Nava Mau took the opportunity to declare how much the courage of Richard Gadd had touched her: “Richard shared a lot of things with me. Richard was very generous in sharing, you know, pieces of his own life and the relationship that he had.” The actress is honored and touched to have been able to be the comedian’s confidante : “The story being told is based on a real person, Richard had a relationship with a trans woman who inspired the storyline and so I think it allowed for a level of nuance and complexity that still feels groundbreaking.”
