According to experts, although the cookbook is not unique, it is exceptionally well preserved and readable. It contains dozens of recipes, some very detailed, others a little less. This one belonged to a certain Joanna Kortenbos, a concierge at a tailor.

In particular, the cookbook shows how dishes such as lobster soup, strawberry tart and crème brûlée were prepared in the 18th century. In addition to recipes, it also contains some household tips and medical preparations.

“It is not only a cookbook, but also a temporal document that gives a special insight into everyday life in Antwerp,” Henri Godts of Arenberg Auctions commented on Friday. “That’s one of the reasons why this extraordinary amount was proposed.”
