PSG is suffering but is almost there. Thanks to their stunning victory against Manchester City (4-2), the Parisians, who got off to a bad start at kick-off, took a big step towards qualifying for the Champions League play-offs.

Now 22nd with 10 points before the final day against Stuttgart, the Parisians are provisionally among the 24 teams qualified for the rest of the competition (the first eight directly qualified for the eighth, teams 9 to 24 in the play-offs). What scenarios during the last day of the league phase would qualify them?

A victory or a draw and PSG will qualify

With this victory, the equation has been greatly simplified for PSG: a victory or a draw against Stuttgart, Wednesday January 29, and PSG will see the play-offs. He could no longer be joined by enough pursuers to escape the 24 qualifying places. A possible scenario, but it will be on German lands. And then, PSG has already suffered two defeats in the final moments in this Champions League campaign against Girona (1-0) and Atlético de Madrid (2-1). So be careful!

With a defeat, PSG will not have its destiny in hand

It is in the case of a defeat that it will be necessary to take stock to pass at the last minute for . In this scenario, Stuttgart would pass in front of the Parisians, who will then have to monitor the results of the four clubs which threaten them: Sporting Portugal (23rd) against Bologna, Manchester City (25th) against Bruges, Dinamo Zagreb (26th) against AC Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk (27th) against Borussia Dortmund.

It will therefore be necessary to count on the realization of two of the scenarios below for PSG to pass with a defeat:

  • Sporting Portugal loses against Bologna and Paris loses by the same margin or better against Stuttgart
  • Manchester City fails to win against Bruges
  • Dinamo Zagreb fails to win against AC Milan
  • Benfica loses against Juventus by one more goal than Paris against Stuttgart

If, for its part, Shakhtar Donetsk were to win against Dortmund with a margin that would put them ahead of PSG in the standings (eight goals difference in favor of PSG currently), then it would take not two but three of the conditions listed above for the Parisians to see the play-offs with a defeat. In short, the simplest thing for Luis Enrique’s men is still… not to lose in Stuttgart!
