Why are the Village People chanting for Trump despite supporting Kamala Harris?

This Monday, January 20, Donald Trump will be sworn in for a second term as the 47th President of the United States. If the event is above all political, it will also be musical.

This Monday, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. A ceremony which will not be limited to political speeches: music will also have a special place. From country to disco, with touches of rock and rap, here are the artists who will make Washington vibrate for this big day.

It’s impossible to talk about the soundtrack of Donald Trump’s events without talking about the Village People. The disco group, known worldwide for their hit YMCA.will be doubly present. After performing at the meeting on Sunday evening, the group will also perform at the “Liberty Ball”, one of the official balls on Monday.

Footage of his choreography to this music during his campaign went viral on social media. Sunday evening, the future 47th President of the United States once again performed a few dance steps on stage, surrounded by the star American disco group of the 1970s. The song, composed by leader Victor Willis as well as Jacques Morali and producer Henri Belolo, both French, originally embodied an anthem of the homosexual male community.

The choice may be surprising, especially when we know that their rights had already been at the heart of a controversy in 2020. This time, Victor Willis, emblematic singer of the group which supported Kamala Harris during the presidential campaign, explained that “music must live without political consideration”.

“Let’s give President Trump a chance, regardless of what you may have thought of him in the past. Let’s see what he does in the future, and if he takes steps to restrict LGBTQ rights, the Village People will be the first to speak out”he wrote on Facebook on Friday. “Village People will perform for both Democrats and Republicans. We are not a political group. We never have been and we never will be, even if some of you try to make us out to be such”he added.

Carrie Underwood, America’s Patriotic Voice

Carrie Underwood will lend her voice to a key moment of the ceremony. She will perform “America the Beautiful” just after Donald Trump’s oath of office.

The country singer, known for songs like “Jesus”, “Take the Wheel”, said she was “honored to participate in this historic event”. Although she is not an outspoken Trump supporter.

Christopher Macchio: Trump’s favorite tenor

Christopher Macchio, sometimes nicknamed the “Pavarotti of Mar-a-Lago,” will open and close the ceremony by performing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the American national anthem. A regular at events organized by Donald Trump, he had already rocked Mar-a-Lago with his rendition of Nessun Dorma.

The artist hopes, in his words, to “contribute to restoring the unity and pride of the nation”.

Kid Rock and Billy Ray Cyrus: the essential supports

Kid Rock, loyal ally of Donald Trump, will also be there. Known for his mix of rock and rap, the artist has become close to the president, sharing golf games and improbable discussions on international politics with him.

Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus’ father, will also take the stage. After his worldwide success with “Old Town Road” in a duet with Lil Nas X, he will honor country, a genre inseparable from pro-Trump events.

Jason Aldean and Rascal Flatts: country soul

Jason Aldean, whose song “Try That in a Small Town” attracted controversy for its pro-gun lyrics, will be one of the main performers at the evening’s dance. He also dedicated this title to Donald Trump in 2024 after an assassination attempt against the latter.

The Rascal Flatts trio, known for their cover of “Life Is a Highway” popularized by the Pixar film Cars, will bring a nostalgic touch to the evening. The organizing committee also promises a major musical surprise. According to some rumors, rapper Nelly could make an appearance, adding an urban touch to a program very focused on typically American sounds.
