“Irritant odors” released by the fire at an industrial waste site near

Irritant smells of burning: dozens of residents of the Lyon Metropolis have reported strong fumes since this morning.like burned chemicals“. These are the olfactory consequences of a major fire which broke out around 6 a.m. this Sunday morning, January 19, 2025 within an industrial waste sorting center in Saint-Fons, in the Rhône.

According to the Rhône Prefecture, the fire broke out on the site of the SUEZ Recyclage et Valorisation company which stores waste electrical and electronic equipment. There are no injuries.

50 firefighters and 14 land vehicles were deployed on site by the SDMIS du Rhône. At the end of the morning, the fire was under control, information confirmed by the Rhône Prefecture. The fire should be completely under control by the afternoon.

The fire caused significant plumes of white smoke. The A7 motorway is not affected by the smoke. The first air quality measurements deployed by the SDMIS do not indicate any toxicity for the population.
