Doping in hockey: Kloten terminates Miro Aaltonen’s contract

New episode in the wise Miro Aaltonen. The Finn, provisionally suspended and under investigation by Swiss Sport Integrity for a potential anti-doping rule violation, is no longer an EHC Kloten player.

The club, currently sixth in the National League, announced on Saturday the termination of the contract of its top scorer by mutual agreement and with immediate effect. He has worn the colors of the Aviators since 2022.

“After his potential violation of the anti-doping regulations became known, a respectful and open exchange took place between Miro Aaltonen and the club management, during which they jointly decided on this measure,” explained the Zurich organization.

Miro Aaltonen also spoke: “I would like to officially apologize to our fans, my teammates and the entire club and its employees. It was important for me to now face the consequences of my actions.”

On Friday, the attacker had already spoken out to clarify the situation via a press release issued to the Finnish national news agency STT. “During the 2024 Christmas break, I went to a nightclub and apparently used, for recreational purposes, a substance that does not enhance performance, but is banned in sport,” he said. he justified. The substance in question has not been revealed by Swiss Sport Integrity.

In the fight for the top 6 directly qualifying for the play-offs, Kloten will now have to replace Miro Aaltonen. The 2022 Olympic champion was the Aviators’ best scorer with a total of 35 points in 36 outings.

For personal and procedural reasons, Kloten indicates that he will no longer share any information regarding this matter.

At present, CP Bern, the club with which Miro Aaltonen signed a two-year contract starting from the 2025-2026 season, has still not reacted.
