Vehicles set on fire, fireworks fired against the police… What we know about the urban violence affecting

Fourteen people were taken into police custody in two days, during a series of arrests which took place after two nights of urban violence, in the metropolitan area. A few days before the New Year, law enforcement fears the worst.

Alarming incidents. On the evening of Sunday, December 29, four people were taken into police custody in Strasbourg, after a series of violence and damage, particularly to vehicles. According to a police source at CNEWS, eleven people had already been taken into custody on Saturday, December 28, in the evening, for mortar fire at police officers and firefighters.

For several days, the Strasbourg metropolitan area has been plagued by an episode of urban violence. On social networks, several videos were broadcast showing mortar fire and trash fires. A total of 41 cars were burned. The events took place on the night of Thursday December 26 to December 27, in the Hautepierre, Cronenbourg, Meinau and Port du Rhin districts.

“Intolerable criminal acts”

The prefecture denounced these “incidents” to the AFP, specifying that the prefect “condemns[ait] with force and vigor these actions carried out by young delinquents. “Specific operations were carried out, at his request, with the support of CRS 8, specialized in the management of these phenomena,” the prefecture further declared.

In a press release, the Alliance Police Strasbourg union said it “strongly condemned the urban violence which strikes as the New Year approaches”, denouncing “intolerable criminal acts” and demanding “a firm and immediate criminal response”.

Curfew for children under 16

A few days before New Year’s Eve, this episode of urban violence worries the police, who fear the worst, despite the restrictions put in place by the government.

The Bas-Rhin prefecture established a curfew for those under 16 in several municipalities in the department on the evening of December 31. Likewise, throughout the department, “the purchase, sale, possession, transport and use of fireworks and pyrotechnic articles of categories F2 and F3” are prohibited until January 3, 2025. .

Many departments have taken similar measures, in accordance with the request of Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who called on prefects and security officials for “maximum vigilance” for the end-of-year celebrations.
