Price of electricity: a 14% reduction in the regulated tariff for individuals as of February 1

From February 1, 2025, the regulated electricity price will fall by around 14%.

For a household of four people heating with electricity, this represents a potential saving of 450 euros over one year.

If taxes that were drastically reduced during the energy crisis will increase again, the increase will be lower than initially planned.

The price shield on electricity will end on February 1, but without the tax increase initially planned by the government, according to a decree published this Saturday in the Official Journal. The consequence? An expected drop of 14% in the regulated rate for individuals, according to the government.

According to the decree, the tax (excise) will rise automatically on February 1. It will return to its pre-crisis level, increased by inflation, i.e. 33.70 euros per megawatt hour for individuals compared to 22 currently. No additional increase will be applied, which will allow the regulated price to reflect the drop in international market prices.

“We remain with what the law provides without additional intervention”had highlighted Michel Barnier’s entourage a few weeks ago, when the latter was still at Matignon. A reduction was therefore expected, but it was necessary to wait for the publication of a decree for this to be confirmed.
