The plane that crashed in Kazakhstan, near Aktau, was an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 which departed from Baku and was headed to Grozny. There were 69 people on board

An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane with 69 people on boardstarted from Baku and directed to Groznyin Russia, crashed in Kazakhstan near the city of Aktau. This was reported by Russian agencies. The flight was an Embraer 190.

According to the Kazakh emergency minister, there were “several survivors”. The General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan speaks, updating the total number of victims, of 32 people survivors of which ten are in serious condition, already transported to nearby hospitals (the Kazakh minister for emerging emergencies still speaks of 29). The deaths, however, would be 37. Regional authorities also reported that, so far, four bodies have been recovered from the crash site.

There is still no clear information on the cause of the accident. From initial reconstructions there was talk of a possible collision with one flock of birds.

From initial reconstructions, it seems that the crew had reported problems and were thus diverted first to Makhachkala and then to Aktau. He then flew over Aktau airport and asked for a emergency landing. The pilots, however, were unable to control the descent, and the aircraft hit the ground with its nose, exploding.

The Kazakh police opened a criminal case: “Transportation Police Department officials have initiated a preliminary investigation into an allegation of violation of transportation operations safety regulations resulting in the deaths of two or more persons due to negligence,” the department said. The group, coordinated by special prosecutors from the General Prosecutor's Office, is made up of expert personnel from the Transport Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry for Emergency Situations. A government commission, including the Chief Transport Prosecutor, is heading to the site of the plane crash. Kazakhstan's prosecutor general is overseeing the investigation, the prosecutor general's office said.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who arrived in Russia to participate in an informal summit of the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States with Vladimir Putin, decided to interrupt his visit to return to Azerbaijan. This was reported by the presidential press service.

Embraer 190 dell’Azerbaijan Airlines

The Embraer 190, model of the crashed plane, is a regional turbine-powered airliner, developed in the early 2000s. Its capacity varies between 94 and 114 passengers. In Italy, Air Dolomiti has 15 examples of this model, while Azerbaijan Airlines has 8.

Today's incident is not the first in its history.

On 29 November 2013, a LAM Linhas Aereas de Mocambique plane crashed in Namibia. There were no survivors. There were 27 passengers and six crew members on board. In 2018, however, an E-190 from a Mexican company failed to take off, causing 85 injuries and no casualties.

However, there have been three historical accidents linked to the Azerbaijani company: two in 1995 (one in November and one in December), with 52 people dying in the second accident following an engine failure. While the third in 2005, when the Antonov An-140 flight crashed into the Caspian Sea following a failure. There were no survivors among the 23 on board.
