“Life is a wonderful gift.” It is with these words that Simone Muratore concluded his farewell message to professional Football on Saturday on Instagram. The Italian, a former international hopeful, decided to retire from sport at the age of just 26. The reason? He has changed since recovering from cancer diagnosed in 2021.
“I tried to the end to come back,” wrote the Transalpine. I put in tears and sweat, but I was no longer the same as before. I realized that I was lucky to be cured and to be fine.” It must be said that Simone Muratore had to come back a long way due to her left ventricular neurocytoma, a rare brain tumor, which required surgery and extensive treatment.
“It was days, weeks, months, years of suffering. I had to relearn how to speak correctly, to walk, to run, to write, to read, to count. It was as if I had become a child again and had to start all over again,” he says.
Despite all his resilience, a return to professional football was no longer possible. Trained at Juventus, Simone Muratore has five appearances (4 in Serie A and 1 in the Champions League) in official matches with the Turin club during the 2019-2020 season. He won the Italian championship title there.
The midfielder then left for Atalanta. He never played there and was loaned successively to AC Reggiana and Tondela, in the Portuguese first division, where his illness was discovered in September 2021.
“I had the chance to play with extraordinary players, exceptional players, on the field but especially off the field, and no one will ever take that away from me. I thank Juventus, Atalanta and Tondela for supporting me.
From now on, Simone Muratore will concentrate on her family life with her son Tommaso “who gave her the strength to continue”.
