    Since the fall of the dictatorial regime of Bashar Al-Assad last week, a debate has raged in several European countries: are Syrian refugees still welcome? The day after the end of the fighting, on December 9, a long list of countries announced the immediate cessation of the examination of the asylum applications of more than 100,000 Syrians.

    • Italy
    • Germany
    • Austria

  • Expulsion

    In some of these countries, there is open talk of deporting all Syrian refugees to their countries of origin. In Austria, where there are 95,000, the government has already taken steps in this direction. The German right, favorite in view of the elections next February, for its part is making an electoral proposal.

The Islamist rebels who overthrew the Syrian regime are considered terrorists by several Western countries, and a multitude of questions remain about what happens next in this battered country, where 80% of the population lives below the poverty line.
