China: Harbin, the ice city comes to life

The city of Harbin in China has been transformed every winter for 30 years. This year, the city will welcome around 30,000 visitors per day during the Christmas period.

To create the famous ice village, thousands of blocks of ice are first cut by hand, then carefully loaded. But the real work begins at night. Using thousands of machines, workers construct an ice tower, a structure that takes at least ten days to complete. “We used 300 cubic meters of ice to build this building, it’s an absolute record this year“, says a worker.

Every year for the past 30 years, Harbin has hosted a gigantic ice and snow sculpture exhibition, day and night, in winter. The first snowmen of the season have already been erected and tourists are delighted. The enchantment has a certain cost: 40 euros per ticket. For the 30,000 daily visitors during the Christmas period, living an ice cream dream is priceless.
