“I earn 1800 euros per month and this is how much I will pay in taxes in 2025”

17 million French people could pay much more taxes than last year even if their salary has not changed.

This is one of the big topics of the moment. Given the prevailing political instability, the question of the amount of taxes to pay in 2025 arises for many French people. With the mention of censorship adopted and the 2025 budget still not finalized, the alert given in recent weeks could well come true: 17 million households could pay more to the tax authorities next year compared to this year.

Faced with this statement made by the now resigned Minister of the Budget, what would really be the impact on the wallets of the people concerned? Flashlight did the calculations, based on the median salary: 1850 euros net before taxes. Here are the results in three cases.

A single person receives 1,800 euros in salary each month in his bank account (€1,850 before withholding tax). Fixed remuneration throughout the year 2024, which he will therefore declare for taxes in spring 2025. Without children, this employee does not use any reduction or tax credit either. It is therefore a very simple declaration that he will make to the tax authorities.

When he transmitted his income, the Public Treasury was to ask him for a total of 526 euros since this will be calculated on a scale which will not have been increased by inflation. If the provisional budget presented by Michel Barnier's government had been adopted, the amount requested by the tax authorities would have been 490 euros. i.e. 36 euros difference over one year.

For a married couple, both members of which earn 1,800 euros net after taxes per month, the gap will be even greater. The bill in the event of no budget and indexation to inflation would be 1353 euros, compared to 1281€ if the budget presented had been adopted. That's 72 euros difference…

Finally, for a couple who are also married, with the same salary, and who have a 10-year-old child in their care, the variation could be even greater, of almost 100 euros. 451€ will be claimed by the tax authorities in the event of non-indexation to inflation compared to 316 euros with the forecast budget ultimately not adopted.

These calculations were carried out on the basis of simple declarations, without any reduction or tax credit, and on the principle of similar income between adults. Verified with the official tax simulator, the amounts indicated correspond to the total to be paid over the year, i.e. withholding tax included.
