Ariana Grande speaks openly about the criticism she receives about her physique

Ariana Grande would like comments on her appearance to stop… And she’s right. In a recent interview published Thursday, December 5 on the Youtube channel of French content creator Sally on the occasion of the film’s release in Wicked of which she is the headliner, Ariana Grande spoke out, as she has rarely done before, about being the constant target of criticism since her debut in music.

“I tried to change but I was criticized again for other reasons”

During the interview, the interviewer discusses the role of Glinda, played by Ariana Grande in the film, who faces some pressure regarding her appearance. A role that necessarily resonates with the singer’s career. “Being in front of an audience and feeling like a specimen in a jar, that’s what I’ve been doing since I was 16-17,” Ariana Grande begins, not without emotion. “So I’ve heard everything about me, I heard all versions of what people said was wrong with me, so I tried to change but was criticized again for other reasons. And for everything! Even the simplest things like my appearance.”

And continued: “It’s important to protect yourself against these words and I think it’s horrible for anyone to experience. Whether it’s a family dinner and your grandmother says to you: ‘Oh my God, you look skinny!” or ‘You’ve gained weight, what’s going on?’ “It’s something that’s horrible and uncomfortable no matter where it happens.”

Critics are also very present on social networks, where the young woman with several million subscribers is often confronted. “I think that in our society today there is a certain comfort that people have, and that they should not have at all, to comment on others about their physical appearance, about what they think they are. happens ‘behind the scenes’ or about their state of health. They criticize what you wear, your body, your face, absolutely everything. There is this ease of commenting on all this and I think it is really dangerous for everyone,” she says.

“I’m really lucky to have the support I have every day, to know that I’m beautiful deep down. But I know what it’s like to have this constant pressure, it’s a shadow that has followed me since I was 17 and it’s not something I want to feel anymore“, she says, before concluding that everyone is free to do what they want to protect themselves, such as blocking hateful people on social networks, for example.

Deemed “too skinny” on social networks

Recently, Ariana Grande was the target of inappropriate comments on social networks. In April 2023, in a video posted on TikTok, the 31-year-old young woman felt obliged to speak out regarding her appearance deemed “too skinny” by many Internet users, visibly worried for the star. “The body you’re comparing my current body to was the unhealthy version of me,” she explained, referring to comments and before/after photos of the star circulating on social media. “I was taking a lot of antidepressants, I was drinking and eating poorly, and I was at the lowest point in my life when I looked like what you would consider ‘healthy,’ but in truth, I wasn’t.” .

And concluded: “You never know what someone is going through. So even if you come with a kind and caring intention, that person is probably already working through it or has a support system that they are working with. Be gentle each other with others and with yourself.”
