They will prepare a new map of flooded areas by DANA

The Government of Valencia is create a new map areas flooded by the DANA which devastated the city at the end of October. This will be done after updating the depth measurement of the Poyo, Magro and Turia river channels.

The Generalitat will prepare a new mapping of flooded areas after updating the measurement of the draft or depth of water flow of the Turia, Magro and Poyo. This was confirmed by the Minister of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, Vicente Martínez Mus, during his visit to the Poyo ravine, passing through Riba-roja de Túria.

Mapping of DANA

This tool, implemented by the General Directorate of Town Planning, Landscape and Environmental Assessment, adapts the “Risk Services” application used by firefighters. Thus, this will make it possible to delimit the areas which have suffered flooding and the height of the water current in each of them. In addition, with this application you can create cartographic maps of these flooded areas and clearly visualize the affected territory and the extent of the flooding.

In short, it will be possible to obtain, in real time, the information collected by the technicians deployed in the area of the Turia, Magro and Poyo basins, which will be fed daily into the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs, for later create a map adapted to what happened during the floods.

Then, photographs taken in the field are georeferenced with GIS tools and linked to information on water table heights, for the subsequent generation of contours that help delineate floods and depths in affected areas. Likewise, changes occurring in the channels of the rivers and ravines affected by flooding.

This aspect will be very useful in issuing sectoral reports which, in terms of flood risk, will help in future decision making and will enable citizens to collect and process information efficiently and quickly. The idea is to prepare for the events of the last DANA do not repeat themselves.
