Israel appoints a defender of the Moroccan character of the Sahara as ambassador to the United States

A few weeks before the inauguration of Donald Trump, on January 20, 2025, as president of the United States, the Israeli government has appointed a new ambassador to Washington. The choice of Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, fell on his former advisor Yechiel Leiter. This conservative, a rabbi, having already served under the executive of Ariel Sharon, also of the Likud Party, is considered close to the Republican Party.

Leiter is also a fervent supporter of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. A recognition decision taken by Netanyahu on July 17, 2023, in a letter addressed to King Mohammed VI, announced Israeli recognition of the kingdom’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Two days before this missive, Yechiel Leiter had called on the Israeli government, in an article, to follow in the footsteps of the United States. “For reasons of regional and global stability, the Israeli government must act immediately. It is high time to fully recognize the southern provinces of Morocco as an indivisible part of the country, as well as its autonomy plan for the Sahrawis,” he argued.

The ambassadors to the United States of the signatory countries of the Abraham Accords (Morocco, Israel, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain) coordinate their actions on certain issues. They also maintain consultations with the Abraham Accord Caucus, a body which brings together American parliamentarians from Republicans and Democrats.
