Oscar Piastri gains freedom as McLaren relaxes team orders after Brazil.

Oscar Piastri revealed that McLaren relaxed his stance on team orders, allowing him to pursue victories more freely after the championship hopes of Lando Norris faded following the chaotic Brazilian Grand Prix. The change comes just in time for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, marking a potential turning point in McLaren's 'Papaya Rules'.

“Piastri Can Fight For Victories Again”

Since Monza, McLaren had prioritized Norris' bid for the title, a policy which cost Piastri the opportunity to fight for his own glory. Piastri's compliance at Interlagos—giving up a Sprint win and pulling away in the main race—exemplified the team's commitment to propping up Norris' slim title chances. However, Norris's sixth place in Brazil, coupled with the stunning victory of Max Verstappen from 17th position on the grid, left the Briton 62 points behind in the standings.

Acknowledging the changing dynamics, Piastri revealed:

“For the vast majority of situations, it’s back to normal. The Drivers' Championship picture is very thin, and the Constructors' Championship is certainly not over for us. I'm going into the weekend trying to win. »

Although Piastri will enjoy greater freedom, he noted that some “very specific scenarios” could still require him to support Norris in the final three races.

“Lessons from Brazil and Monza”

The decision to revise intra-squad strategy follows high-profile incidents earlier this season. Piastri's daring overtake at Monza contributed to a loss of first and second positions for McLaren, while his cooperation in Brazil showed his willingness to play the team game.

Reflecting on his decision to forgo the Sprint victory, Piastri said:

“To be honest, I wasn't that disappointed. I think I proved what I wanted to prove in terms of qualifying on pole, and that was more satisfying for me than winning the Sprint. »

Despite his embrace of the team-oriented mentality, Piastri is determined to position himself as a top contender in 2025, aiming to avoid being relegated to a supporting role in future title battles.

“McLaren’s Broader Direction”

The revised policy underlines McLaren's dual objective: securing the Constructors' Championship while balancing the ambitions of their drivers. With a 36-point lead over Ferrari, McLaren is within touching distance of its first constructors' title since 1998.

As the team changes pace for Las Vegas, Piastri's ability to compete on a level playing field could prove vital to maintaining McLaren's advantage—and to showcasing its credentials as a future challenger in the championship.

“All Eyes on Vegas”

With McLaren offering more freedom to its drivers, the stage is set for a no-holds-barred clash under the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip. As Piastri pursues personal victories and Norris fights to keep his title dream alive, McLaren's evolving dynamics promise to keep fans in suspense.
