LIVE – Storm Caetano: 32 departments on orange alert for snow and ice, 17 for violent winds

On Thursday, the Caetano winter depression crosses from west to east and will cause snowfall to the north of its trajectory and strong winds in its southern part, notably from the Atlantic coasts to the Alps.

Forty-nine departments are affected by this winter storm requiring particular vigilance due to the expected strong winds.

WIND!

During the passage of the winter storm Caetano, gusts of between 100 and 120 km/h are expected on the coast of the departments placed on orange vigilance, and even occasionally up to 130 km/h possible on the exposed islands and capes, warns Météo-France in its bulletin, which mentions, inland, peaks around 110 km/h more occasionally.

On the terrain, we can reach 110 to 130 km/h on the Massif Central and more than 150 km/h on the highest points of the Alps.

At 4 p.m., the alert for snow, ice and strong winds was extended to 49 departments. Concerning snowfall, four departments are added to the 28 already mentioned: Cher, Nièvre, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes.

These snowfalls are expected “between the end of the night from Wednesday to Thursday and the evening of Thursday” and the orange vigilance, the second most important of the four Météo-France levels, is maintained at least until midnight Thursday. 28 departments were initially placed on orange vigilance.

Twenty-eight departments are thus affected by the orange “snow-ice” vigilance issued from 6 a.m. due to this early winter episode. “Two to 5 cm in the plain, locally up to 10 cm above 200/300m altitude” are expected and these are “up to 15 to 20 cm which could cover the plains of eastern Franche-Comté”.

“An extension of this vigilance to some neighboring departments nevertheless remains possible”also notes the forecasting institute.

The departments concerned are: 22, 35, 14, 27, 50, 61, 53, 72, 28, 41 and 45, all departments of Ile-de-France as well as Aube, Yonne, Haute-, Côte-d'Or , Vosges, Haute-Saône, , Territoire de and Haut-Rhin.
