PMU® and Le Fooding have just published a guide listing the “100 bars that make France”. Among them… The Renaissance in Brioude.
Saturday morning, despite the slight cool wind blowing through the Brioude market, it was difficult to find a place on the terrace of La Renaissance. Shopping bags on the ground, many people, once finished shopping, take a break at the café. Summer and winter, we meet there with family around chocolate. With friends at aperitif time. Here, connections are made, generations cross paths, stories are told. We squawk. We laugh. We cry. We exchange. We also play. There is no shortage of horse racing bettors with their eyes glued to the TV.
This eclectic clientele is the strength of La Renaissance. And one of the prides of its manager, Cathy Astanière.
“There are always people here. Before, there were a lot of old people, but the more things go, the more young people I have. It's because I'm pretty cool and I get along well with them. And there is a lot of respect between all these generations. »
La Renaissance also owes its success to its location, Place Lafayette, the beating heart of the Saint-Julien city. This is what caught the eye of the Fooding investigators, the famous independent guide to restaurants, rooms, bars, cellars and shops, which, in partnership with PMU®, published a unique guide on November 14: PMU ®, the 100 bars that make France. This one highlights the Renaissance.
An establishment that lives with the times
“To begin with, we had to go through the list of 14,200 points of sale in the PMU® network to arrive at a preselection of around 250 addresses,” explains the Fooding team. For several weeks, 35 investigators from the guide toured the addresses to arrive at a selection of our 100 favorite bars that are making France move! »

In Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, eight establishments were selected […] . Including the Brivadois bar in the “Open-air, with terraces perfect for enjoying a drink outdoors” category. To the greatest (and pleasant) surprise of Cathy Astanière. “When your heart is racing, there's nothing more pleasant than tuning into the pulse of a city by sitting on the best-placed terrace. Sitting there, we smile at the joyful ballet of people passing, zigzagging, running with their arms full of groceries, running after their toddlers… Life rushes by in the cobbled streets of downtown Brioude
», We can read in the pages of the guide.
“I don’t know if I have the best-placed terrace, but perhaps the one with the most traffic,” smiles the owner. It’s true that Place Lafayette is a very good location…”
Cathy Astanière has known this bar forever, or almost. “I worked here during the Danielle Guerreiro era. I did extras, my brother did too. I bought the establishment on May 9, 2019… just before Covid. » A hard blow. The bar closed its curtain for many months. “It cooled people down… Even afterwards, they no longer consumed as before. For example, regarding the PMU®, there is now a phone application. So I still have people for horse racing, but perhaps a little less than before…”
Marriage proposals
From her terrace, Cathy Astanière observes life in Briva as it goes by. Joyful, friendly, warm, the establishment lives with the times. Like a reflection of the soul of the city. And it’s not just the heart of the city of Saint-Julien that beats here. “There were two marriage proposals on the terrace recently. It's funny. They were people I didn't know at all. Besides, we were invited to the wedding of one of the couples…”
