New massive Russian strikes on 1000th day of war in Ukraine

An attack left around ten dead in the Sumy region and the Russian army continues its strikes against Ukrainian electrical installations in Zaporizhia.

As Ukrainians gathered to mark the 1,000th day of the Russian invasion, new strikes hit the Sumy region and damaged the Zaporizhia power grid.

A drone struck on Tuesday a residential building in the Sumy region of northern Ukraine, killing at least 10 people, including a child.

The Russian army also massively attacked Zaporizhzhia on Monday evening with 10 Shahed drones, targeting the city's electricity infrastructure. The attack left more than 15,000 people without electricity and hundreds of homes without heating.

These strikes occur while Ukraine fired 6 US-made missiles at Bryansk region, Russian Defense Ministry saysafter the lifting of restrictions on the use of American weapons by Joe Biden on Sunday.

The deadliest European conflict since World War II

Several cities in Ukraine and other European countries held ceremonies to mark 1000 days of war between Kyiv and Moscow.

Since February 2022, around 12,000 civilians – including at least 2,406 children, according to UNICEF – and 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers are believed to have been killed.

On the occasion of the 1,000th day of war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky speaks from Kyiv during an extraordinary session at the European Parliament.

He urged the EU to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and deprive him of his “money and its power” in order to force Moscow to initiate “serious negotiations” to end the war.

“Vladimir Putin does not value people or rules. Only money and power matter to him. These are the things we must take away from him to restore peace.”Volodymyr Zelensky told MEPs on Tuesday.

“Don’t forget everything that Europe is capable of achieving”

During his six-minute speech, Ukraine's president called on European political leaders to focus their energy on weakening the Kremlin's war machinewhich has recently been strengthened by the arrival ofapproximately 11,000 North Korean troops.

“Don’t forget everything that Europe is capable of achieving”Volodymyr Zelensky told MEPs while presenting his proposals for “push Russia towards a just peace”.

In a recent radio interview, the Ukrainian president expressed hope that the war would end in 2025 with “diplomatic means”.
