What to remember from the day
A shock from the top of the table in a packed and white-hot room. The meeting between Bayeux and Cherbourg presented a setting reflecting its importance. Mohamed Regbaoui's players intended to put an end to Bayeux's invincibility and, at the same time, take control of the championship.
Bayeux led the race until halftime (45-42). The local public may roar upon returning from the locker room, but the balance of power is reversed. In the second half, the Cherbourg machine got going and began to impose its dynamics. The premises are physically outclassed and cannot find the necessary address to block them. The minutes passed and Cherbourg increased its lead to finally win by sixteen points 72-88. With this great success, the Manchois are sending a strong message to the competition. You will have to be very strong to dethrone them from first place. See you on April 12 for part 2 of the debate.
ASPTT Caen, for its part, found its smile again thanks to a short but precious victory in Vitré (59-63). Having struggled for several weeks, the Postiers intended to use this match to bounce back. However, the start of the match was enough to make the Caen collective tremble. It was in the second half that Alhou N'Diaye's players made the difference, driven once again by a sharp Florian Diesnis (26 points).
In the women's Nationale 2, it's a big collective victory for Thomas Léger's players, who had to approach the match against Angers (58-61) weakened. With this success, the DBCN retains second place in the championship. Against Nantes, which has not lost a match since the start of the season, Mondeville 44-61. The Mondeville reserve will nevertheless have succeeded in making its opponent doubt in sequences but insufficiently to reverse the trend. Cherbourg 2 lost 72-55 against Coquelles. A second defeat in a row which takes the team to 8e place in the championship, just in front of Mondeville.
Weekend to forget in the women's Nationale 3. CB Ifs falls against Saran, first in the championship (62-71). La Hague loses, for its part, by 12 points against Gravenchon (52-64), but retains 4the place in the ranking. As for the Alençon reserve, it conceded a new defeat to Saint-Gratien (72-45).
The performance of the weekend
Bayeux will keep bitter memories of it. In the clash at the top of N3, Cherbourg was able to count on the centimeters and talent of Souleymane Berthé, 2.01 meters. Slender, athletic, versatile player, both in attack and defense, the 23-year-old was the main architect of Manche's success with his 21 points.
The reactions of the actors
Alhou N'Diaye (ASPTT Caen coach): “It was an important match for us since we were playing a direct competitor for maintenance, last with only one victory. We presented ourselves weakened since we still have a few players with physical problems. We had a bad start to the match. In the second half, we managed to tighten up the defense and put in some big shots. Thanks to that, we gave ourselves a small mattress which allowed us to win this match against a direct competitor and to stay out of the relegation zone. »
Michael Dejardin (Bayeux coach): “We're in the match in the first half but we're making too many individual errors and that's what's preventing us from going further ahead at rest, which would have been good for us mentally. Afterwards, they took us out of our playing patterns, they played to their strengths and had great skill. As we could no longer score, we gave up a little early. Physically, they hurt us. We only scored 27 points in the second half, the mass is said. We give them a lot of second chances. We lack discipline in our game and Basketball remains a sport of skill. When you don't put it in, it quickly becomes complicated. We had difficulty raising our heads. It's just a defeat, it's not the end of the world or the championship. I wouldn't say that I'm falling back to earth tonight, but the players definitely are. We had a great dynamic, we were euphoric. We knew that losing this match would hurt our heads. We have to get up. Cherbourg is clearly the favorite. If we can tease them a little more, that's cool. It was a great basketball celebration in a packed house. I hope we put on a great show and that people will come back. »
Mohamed Regbaoui (Cherbourg coach): “We knew it would be extremely complicated to win here. They were undefeated. It's a very big home team, pushed by an extraordinary team. The task was tough, but we knew we had the ability to do it as we gained strength. In preparation against them, we had gained the upper hand. We are continuing with what we are offering at the moment, we have been able to stay calm, let the storm pass and gain momentum as the minutes pass. We made mistakes in the first half and we waited for the right moment to put our game in place. It's a great team victory, a common effort and for a coach, that's what there is. is more pleasant to live in. Over time, we wrung them out. Bayeux is a very good team which, if it plays at its cruising speed, is difficult to play. If we rev them up, we can have them wear out.
My players were incredible, we had to be able to support the excitement surrounding this match. They showed serenity. The mistake would be to relax next week, after having made so much effort this evening. The road is still long and we still have a lot of travel. You have to stay focused. This is just one step among others. We are super happy, we have to rejoice in this victory until Monday and then get back to work. We made up for the Brest blunder and took a good option. We must be constant in our commitment. »
