A 66-year-old New Yorker is claiming nearly 600,000 euros from the airline Air France for a delay when he wanted to go to his brother’s funeral.
A delay which, according to him, justifies substantial compensation. On September 20, Nicholas Owoyemi, a 66-year-old New Yorker, was scheduled to travel to Lagos, Nigeria, from New York, for his brother’s funeral, reports the New York Post.
The trip, however, went wrong when, according to the story given by the American media, the Air France company delayed its stopover at Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport in Paris.
The sixty-year-old who was supposed to arrive in Lagos at 9:40 p.m., according to his ticket, arrived at 1 a.m. on September 21, according to court documents. Due to the delay, Nicholas Owoyemi and his traveling companion “could not reach their destination and had to spend the night at a nearby hotel for additional charges,” he said in a complaint filed in court Supreme Court of Staten Island against the airline.
“They made me do something stupid and lost my luggage, which was not found for three weeks,” he added to the New York Post.
Forced to cross the entire Roissy airport on foot
Although he was able to attend his brother’s funeral, the man said his trip back to New York was also delayed by more than five hours and that at one point Air France “re-checked” him » on a Delta Airlines flight which had not registered him as a passenger.
In his complaint, the victim states that due to his poor medical and cardiac condition, he suffered grief and discomfort and fell ill throughout his stay at Paris airport. He also allegedly traveled the distance between the Air France and Delta Airlines terminals on several occasions.
The New Yorker therefore sued Air France and went to court this week. He is demanding 600,000 dollars, or a little less than 570,000 euros, from the French company in order to be compensated for the “emotional and financial stress” caused by this mishap.
