Salim Sayegh, Kataeb MP from Kesrouan, affirmed that “the incident at Beirut airport confirms that legitimate Lebanon is capable of restoring and preserving its sovereignty.” He added that the Iranian occupation of political decision-making in Lebanon is being tested. “If we take a unified position with the free Shiites, the situation will change.”
On Friday, security services at Beirut airport insisted on searching the luggage of the Iranian delegation accompanying Ali Larijani, envoy of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, despite an initial refusal of cooperation from the Iranians. During a television interview, the MP stressed that this visit constitutes “a clear and direct message to all those who try to rebel against the resistance line, first and foremost to the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berry”.
Furthermore, Mr. Sayegh indicated that through their envoy Amos Hochstein, the United States is seeking to reach an agreement for a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. However, he criticized the Speaker of the House, Nabih Berry, for not having fully exploited his room for maneuver to get Lebanon out of the crisis. According to him, the axis of the “resistance” seeks to obtain a ceasefire without making any concessions, thus finding itself in a delicate internal position. “Any proposed initiative or solution cannot be taken seriously as long as Nabih Berry’s hands remain tied,” he said.
Criticizing Hezbollah's policies, Salim Sayegh expressed fear that non-compliance with international resolutions could lead to a two-pronged solution. “Either we adopt autonomous security throughout Lebanon, or these resolutions will be implemented by force, under Chapter VII,” he warned.
