Last night, around 1:10 a.m., the Brussels Fire Brigade, medical emergency services 112 and the Brussels-Midi zone police intervened for a fire in a 3-storey building with a business on the ground floor in Anderlecht, rue de Fiennes .
“When the firefighters arrived, there was a lot of smoke. The fire was raging in the stairwell. 2 occupants were evacuated on our self-ladders, our rescue instrument par excellence”confides Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the firefighters. It was a passerby who alerted the residents of the building and helped them evacuate. He even burned his hands and was taken to hospital.
“Unfortunately three remains were discovered during Search & Rescue. Two victims on the 1st floor landing and one victim at the entrance to an apartment on the 3rd floor. Probably the unfortunate people attempted to escape through the stairwell, which was completely smoky and engulfed in flames.”adds the spokesperson.
The fire was finally brought under control around 1:40 a.m. and the origin of the fire remains to be determined. Following the fire, a gas leak occurred in the building. Sibelga came to the site to cut off the gas supply. The electricity was also cut off. “In homes, there is practically no damage from flames, but rather from smoke and soot.”
