Brian Ferreyra was marked by a match involving Gimnasia against Nueva Chicago. Now he will be the referee in the crucial second leg.

The appointment of the referee for the second match of the playoff series between San Martín de Tucumán and Gimnasia did not go unnoticed in Mendoza. Brian Ferreyra will be the one to oversee the match at La Ciudadela, despite a controversial past with Gimnasia.

This incident occurred during the 2023 season during a match held at Víctor Legrotaglie, where Nueva Chicago initially led 1-0, but Gimnasia turned the situation around to win 2-1. The match featured several key moments, including a red card for Torito coach Montenegro, but the most controversial moment came at the end, when Ferreyra failed to award a penalty for a foul on Vesco, which which could have changed the course of the match.

After the match, the Mataderos goalkeeper expressed criticism of the referee, saying: “Four guys decide to ruin your life and that’s it. The referee, from the first minute, said ‘I’m here to send you off, and the second’, and he threatened you. I felt robbed today. The referee’s performance was terrible, it’s a shame they are tarnishing football so much. Dany expressed Monllor at the time.

This season, Ferreyra has yet to officiate a Gimnasia match, while he has refereed San Martín de Tucumán on four occasions, resulting in three wins and one draw. On Sunday, at the Jardín de la República, he will be assisted by José Castelli (Assistant 1), Juan Del Fueyo (Assistant 2) and Lucas Cavallero (Fourth Official).

The appointment of the referee was eagerly awaited by Gimnasia, especially given the events of the first leg. Referee Monsón Brizuela was too lenient with the Tucumán team’s time-wasting shenanigans. Darío Sand, the San Martín goalkeeper, exhibited time-wasting behavior from the start and was only booked at the end of the match.
