In Israel, what is behind the dismissal of the Minister of Defense?

The Israeli impasse

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an armed operation which left 1,700 dead and took 200 hostages. The operation was daring and unprecedented. The Israeli reaction aimed to “punish” Hamas and bring back the hostages. Results: after a year, 80 hostages have still not been released.

On the other hand, Gaza was razed. There are more than 40,000 dead, most of them civilians, women and children. The surviving Palestinian population lives in tents or under the rubble. The images went around the world and provoked huge crowds of demonstrators. More than 80,000 tons of bombs were dropped. It is therefore a failure in relation to the proclaimed objectives.

Gallant responded to his dismissal, warning of the “moral darkness that has engulfed the country.” He gives 3 reasons: his opposition to exempting Orthodox young people, the imperative to bring back the hostages, a state investigation into October 7 and the war that followed. For the leader of the opposition, Gallant refused “Netanyahu's miserable policy to the detriment of the hostages”.

A snub to the Americans

In a statement, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said Yoav Galant has been a “trusted partner” and will continue to work closely with Israel's next defense minister. “America’s commitment to Israel’s security remains unwavering and the U.S. Department of Defense will continue to work closely with Israel’s next Minister of Defense.” However, no reaction from Biden's side.

Netanyahu is jubilant. In October, Austin and Blinken sent him a letter demanding the daily entry of 350 trucks of food and other products. A deadline was even set. One week before the deadline, Monday November 4, Matthew Miller estimated that Israel had failed to respond to the White House's request and the meager progress was largely insufficient. It is announced that only 71 trucks passed. What will this ultimatum be worth when the presidential elections are over?

The whole world warned

Everything happens as if the Hamas operation of October 7 was an opportunity for Israel to achieve hidden political objectives. Netanyahu wants to conquer all of Palestine. He placed the Palestinian Authority, represented by Mahmoud Abbas, under supervision. He organizes the colonization of Palestinian lands up to the theft of property. He aided and financed Hamas in an attempt to weaken and discredit official political representation. He thought that after pitting one faction against the other, it would then be easier to take down Hamas, which was labeled terrorist.

However, Defense Minister Gallant's request to conduct a state investigation into the events of October 7 and its aftermath shows that he doubts the official narrative. In any case, he does not understand the abandonment of the hostages, after a year of asymmetrical war. After all, if they are still alive after 80,000 tons of bombs were dropped, it proves that Hamas protected their lives, unlike Netanyahu. Such an attitude by Israel defies human rights and collective morality.

Israel thinks it's allowed to do anything. Netanyahu's insolence at the UN General Assembly, the call for the murder of political leaders there, the threat to withdraw from the international institution, the bombing of UNIFIL, the blocking of aid humanitarian… are all attempts to break the legitimacy of the UN and challenge its decisions. He had the nerve to declare the UN Secretary General “personae non grata”. In question, the recognition of the Palestinian State, within its 1967 borders, which member states are increasingly demanding at the UN.

The bankruptcy of Western moral values

The expansion of the war towards Lebanon, Iran, Syria, Iraq and Yemen destabilizes the plan of the Americans who are having difficulty countering Chinese power. Netanyahu is leading his Western sponsors into moral bankruptcy. Conversely, China is acting for a ceasefire and Peace. In practice, it has already reconciled Palestinian factions, rivals Iran-Saudi Arabia and an end to the armed conflict in Yemen. It has good popularity with Muslim countries. She made proposals for Ukraine. China is not waging any war. It concluded with India a mode of joint management on the part of the controversial common borders. The UN must take advantage of the open crisis in Israel to accelerate the recognition of the Palestinian state. According to the President of the Palestinian Authority, the election of Trump offers this possibility.
