  • This Tuesday, November 5, 244 million American voters – among whom 80 million have already voted early – are called to the polls to elect their future President, from noon French time and until 7 a.m. Wednesday for the westernmost territory, the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.
  • At the end of a campaign as fierce as it was indecisive, Kamala Harris held a final meeting this Tuesday morning in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, one of the decisive “swing states” in this election. For his part, Donald Trump is finishing his third presidential campaign in Grand Rapids, Michigan, another “rocking state”.
  • Once the polls close, the counting of votes will begin throughout the United States: a process which differs from one state to another and which could take days, particularly in the event of disputes and legal appeals. Knowing that at the same time, Americans also vote for numerous local elections with equally essential implications.

Ultimes meetings. “This could be one of the closest elections in history. Every voice counts”Kamala Harris warned this Tuesday during her last major campaign rally, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which has now ended. “We have the opportunity to finally turn the page on a decade of political project driven by fear and division. We have had enough”said the vice-president and Democratic candidate, without naming the person this message is targeting, her Republican rival. For his part, Donald Trump is still on stage for his very last campaign rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “With your vote tomorrow, we can solve every problem facing our country and lead America and the world to new heights of glory”declared the Republican candidate in particular.

Results, yes but when? While the polls show the two candidates neck and neck, the name of Joe Biden's successor could take hours, days, or even weeks to be made official. In 2020, Joe Biden's victory against Donald Trump was announced by the media four days after the vote. That of Donald Trump on Hillary Clinton in 2016, however, was known the next day. For his election in 2008 against John McCain and his re-election four years later against Mitt Romney, Barack Obama was able to celebrate his victories the same evening. But in 2000 the name of the winner, George W. Bush, was not known until December 12, five weeks after the election, after a long recount process and multiple appeals in Florida, before the Supreme Court slice.

The first Americans voted. It was the six voters of Dixville Notch, a hamlet lost in the forests of New Hampshire on the northeastern border of the United States with Canada, who launched the vote on Tuesday at midnight, perpetuating a tradition established since 1960, which earned it the title of “First in the Nation”. The electoral laws of this small northeastern state allow municipalities with fewer than 100 inhabitants to open their polling stations at midnight and to be able to close them when all the people registered on the electoral lists have voted. But as few as they were, the inhabitants of the town were unable to decide between the American presidential candidates: three votes went to Kamala Harris and three votes for Donald Trump. In 2020, the five electors of Dixville Notch voted unanimously – for only the second time since 1960 – for Joe Biden. Apart from the neighboring village of Millsfield which also votes at night, most polling stations on the east coast will open at 6 a.m. in the United States (12 p.m. in ).
