Spaniard Marc Marquez won the Australian Grand Prix ahead of his compatriot Jorge Martin, celebrating his 62nd MotoGP success.

Third Sunday, Francesco Bagnaia loses ground on Martin in the world championship.

The Italian, who finished 4th in a sprint won by Jorge Martin the day before, is now 20 lengths behind the Spaniard. The double title holder started the weekend at Phillip Island with a 10-point handicap, after having signed the sprint/GP double two weeks earlier.

Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) and Martin (Ducati-Pramac) fought an intense battle on Sunday throughout the race. This ultimately worked to the advantage of the six-time world champion who won his third Grand Prix of the year, proving his return to the top even if he no longer has any chance of winning the championship.

Marquez, however, got off to a very bad start with a spectacular skid of his rear wheel and found himself seventh while Jorge Martin got off to a perfect start, followed by Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati).

The championship leader quickly widened the gap while, behind him, Bezzecchi fell. But like the day before during the sprint race, Marquez began a relentless comeback, appearing in third place after seven laps behind Bagnaia who he quickly attacked, the two drivers closing in on Martin.

The three drivers then launched into a fierce fight, their pursuers quickly being relegated to almost four seconds. Bagnaia, however, was quickly let down. And if Martin managed to resist Marquez’s pressure until four laps from the checkered flag, the six-time world champion overtook him without firing a shot to win by almost a second.

Dettwiler 21e

Present in Australia when he fractured his coccyx in a fall in Motegi, Noah Dettwiler (KTM) could never believe in a top 15 in the Moto3 race. The Basel rider ranked 21st and penultimate, more than 50 seconds behind 2024 world champion David Alonso (CFMoto).
