Karim Hamrouni heads to the penitentiary

Hamrouni was found guilty in April. The case dates back to November 2013 and the crime was proven due to the DNA of the child from this attack.

The victim, whose identity cannot be revealed under a court order, was at the time out at the Living Room bar, where Hamrouni was operations manager. He was also involved in a similar position at the now defunct Liquor Commission.

The crown asked for a sentence of 30 months in prison, while the defense wanted a sentence of imprisonment in the community accompanied by probation. The court therefore sided with the prosecution.

In her decision rendered Friday at the Sherbrooke courthouse, judge Hélène Fabi notes that she gives “significant weight” to the fact that the victim became pregnant after the attack. The high intensity of the “sexual and psychological harm” of the attack on the victim and their vulnerable position during the crime are also aggravating factors.

Ms. Fabi did not judge that the media coverage of the case is a mitigating factor, as Hamrouni claimed. His lack of criminal record is, however, considered a mitigating circumstance.

More details to come.
