could a sequel see the light of day? Tim Schafer is divided on the question

Tim Schafer, director and head of studio Double Fine Productions, recently discussed the possibility of a sequel to Brütal Legendthe cult video game starring Jack Black and Ozzy Osbourne. However, Schafer says he is “divided” on how to approach a possible Brütal Legend 2particularly due to initial criticism of the original game’s genre-blending.

A cult but controversial game

Released in 2009, Brütal Legend quickly gained attention thanks to its impressive cast, including Jack Black in the lead role of Eddie Riggs, as well as rock legends like Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead and Rob Halford of Judas Priest. The game combined action-adventure and real-time strategy (RTS) elements, a blend of genres that baffled some critics upon release, but ultimately helped make it a cult classic.

Despite mixed reviews upon its release, Brütal Legend has won over a loyal audience thanks to its Heavy Metal atmosphere and its soundtrack composed of artists such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Mastodon, Children Of Bodom, and many others.

Fans are clamoring for a sequel, but which genre to choose?

In a post celebrating the game’s 15th anniversary, Schafer shared his dilemma about a possible sequel. “People keep asking for a Brütal Legend 2, and I’m torn about it”he admitted. “Some want an evolution of the RTS elements, while others prefer a game closer to God of War with Eddie Riggs. I understand this logic, but I am much more enthusiastic about the first option.”

Programmer Chad Dawson added that the game’s universe offered huge potential to be explored in different forms. “It could become an RPG, an RTS, or even an auto battler!” he suggested, hinting that the possibilities for a sequel would be numerous.

A sequel depending on the success of Psychonauts 2 ?

This isn’t the first time Schafer has expressed interest in a sequel. In 2015, he mentioned that if Psychonauts 2another community-funded Double Fine game, was enjoying success, so a Brütal Legend 2 could be considered. Although Schafer made no promises, he did imply that the popularity of Psychonauts would perhaps open the door to a sequel for Brütal Legend.

In addition, Jack Black, who lent his voice and appearance to the main character, was open to the idea of reprising his role in a possible sequel in 2014.

A “when” rather than an “if”?

While Double Fine remains undecided about the future of Brütal Legendrecent comments from Schafer and team suggest that a sequel might not be a question of “if,” but “when.” With a community of loyal fans and a wealth of gameplay possibilities, Brütal Legend 2 could well see the light of day if conditions are right.
