National Women’s Day: What do Moroccans think about gender equality?

According to the results of the survey on household perception of certain aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals, nearly six out of ten Moroccans (58.4%) believe that there is no equality between the sexes in the ‘together. This perception is particularly marked in rural areas, where it reaches 65.8%, compared to 52.4% in urban areas.

Depending on gender, there is a significant difference in the way women and men perceive the situation of gender equality in Morocco. The results indicate that 63.3% of women consider that there is no equality between the sexes, while this opinion is shared by 54.8% of men.

The perception of gender inequality also varies by age. Thus, 63.6% of young people aged 18 to 29 believe that gender equality does not exist. This figure is 56.1% among people aged 30 to 59, and it decreases to 54.9% among individuals aged 60 and over.

Several factors can explain young people’s perceptions of gender equality, including changing social norms, their education and their growing awareness of this issue. In addition, generational dynamics encourage them to question the gender inequalities present in society. Conversely, older adults were often socialized in environments where gender roles were more traditional and clearly established. They therefore tend to consider recent changes in favor of gender equality as sufficient.

This unfavorable perception of gender equality varies depending on the area. For example, 16.5% of Moroccans believe that there is no equality between men and women in terms of access to education, while this figure reaches 20.4% for access. to health care. Regarding access to the labor market, nearly 31.5% of Moroccans consider that there is no equality between the sexes, with 25.9% for access to public employment. and 34.3% for access to private employment. In addition, 37.8% of respondents believe that pay equity is not respected. On the other hand, the sharing of domestic tasks is perceived as the area presenting the greatest inequity, with 87.6% of individuals affirming that there is no equality between the sexes in this context.
