Namur Assize Court: Daniel Gilles must answer for the murder of Yohanne Giltay, in Gesves, in 2022

Around midnight, Daniel Gilles, the occupant of the premises, called for help. When they arrived, the paramedics discovered the lifeless body of Yohanne Giltay. She’s Gilles’ partner. The latter is also seriously injured in the legs. The blows were carried out with a knife.

Le Gesvois, aged 44 at the time of the events, literally attacked his victim. The autopsy will reveal fifty-three wounds, all generated by this blunt weapon that the police will soon find on site.

Later, Daniel Gilles will explain to investigators that he completely lost control after consuming cocaine. At the end of the evening, he would have had visions. He would have taken his partner for “a witch” and would have thus unleashed himself on her. A version that Yohanne Giltay can no longer contradict.

In this kitchen, the Gesvoise woman lost her life in the most terrible way. She was 39 years old.

Horror also when we learn that, on the night of the murder, the couple’s little daughter, aged three, was sleeping in a neighboring room.

In the neighborhood, this terrible news is received like an uppercut.

Yohanne is known as a pleasant, smiling person… She manages a grooming salon in the neighboring village. Daniel Gilles operates in the parks and gardens sector.

But justice should have had another vision of things.

Indeed, on November 3, 2018, a violent scene of disturbing similarity had already occurred. There too, Daniel Gilles had used cocaine. There too, he grabbed a knife and finally stuck it in the back of Yohanne Giltay, the woman who shared his life.

The violent companion will only spend a month in preventive detention. He was prosecuted for attempted murder, but ultimately got off lightly.

Daniel Gilles will benefit from a suspension of sentencing, a real measure of clemency.

Despite his problems with alcohol, drug addiction and his violent behavior, the man had obviously given sufficient guarantees to the judicial authorities. No distancing measure will be imposed on him from his victim. He will not be asked to follow training at Praxis to control his excessive violence.

Three years later, however, history will repeat itself. We will find the same protagonists there, but with the most terrible epilogue.
