On February 19, 2022, Mélodie Cauffet, a 25-year-old hiker from Flagnac in Aveyron and recently settled in the town of Almont-les-Junies, was killed by a bullet in the chest from a 17-year-old hunter. while she was walking in the neighboring department of Cantal between Vinzelle and Bécarie.

The Aurillac criminal court sentenced the Approved Municipal Hunting Association (ACCA) of Cassaniouze to a fine of 80,000 euros, including 40,000 suspended this Thursday, October 3, 2024, for having organized a wild boar hunt “totally against the rules”as our colleagues from the Mountain explain.

The prosecutor had requested a fine of 100,000 euros judging the organization of this beat “deficient and failing”recalling that the ACCA had been fined for the lack of warning signs, a year after this tragedy.

Eleven signs to announce the hunt to hikers would normally have to be posted. “The ACCA says it placed four, only one was seen by the investigators. A posted hunter will tell the gendarmes… that he himself played the role of sign”reports the daily, (…) because he would have had “laziness” to take it out of the trunk of his car.

The accident occurred when the shooter had posted herself, without anyone correcting her, “in the middle of a meadow framed by the marked hiking trail. She then aimed at the slope, from top to bottom.” Mélodie, who runs along the meadow, is hit and instantly collapses. The hiker does not survive.

The matter does not stop there. This Tuesday, October 8, the young shooter “will be tried behind closed doors before a children’s court”our colleagues further reveal.
