Swiss police had to open fire twice in 2023, a particularly low level, which contrasts with the increasing use of electric shock guns

Police forces in Switzerland used firearms only twice in 2023, the lowest level ever recorded. The number of electric pulse gun engagements has, however, increased.

One person was fatally injured during each of the two firearm engagements, the Conference of Swiss Cantonal Police Commanders (CCPCS) said on Wednesday. This figure is identical to that of the year 2022, which also saw two deaths by firearm.

In compliance with the principle of proportionality, the use of firearms constitutes the ultimate solution, when it is no longer possible to consider the use of another means, more appropriate or less violent, recalls the CCPCS . The use of firearms has remained at a low level for several years.

In contrast, electric shock guns had to be used 86 times last year, 17 times more than the previous year. However, this figure corresponds to the average of the last three years. /ATS-fba
