The young Swiss Muriel Furrer, aged 18, tragically lost her life following a fall during the junior women’s race at the World Championships. Urgently transported to the University Hospital of Zurich after a serious head injury during the accident which occurred in difficult conditions on Thursday morning, Muriel Furrer unfortunately died on Friday September 27.

The accident occurred on a wet road, while the champion was crossing a forest. Despite the presence of following cars, Muriel Furrer’s fall went unnoticed for many minutes before being discovered by members of the UCI.

At just 18 years old, Muriel Furrer was Swiss vice-champion in the road race, road time trial and cyclo-cross. Recently, she finished 9th in the European Mixed Relay Championship with the Swiss team.

This tragedy hits the Swiss cycling community hard, already mourning the loss of young hopeful Gino Mader during the Tour de Suisse in June 2023. Gino Mader, winner of the last stage of the Ronde de l’Isard in Saint-Girons in 2018, left an indelible memory. As a tribute to this great champion, the organizers created a Trophy in his name during the last edition.
