Tragic incident during the Antwerp derby: a fatal accident

The first Antwerp derby in two years unfortunately did not turn into a football festival this afternoon. As feared, Beerschot supporters disrupted the match.

Unable to digest a 4-0 deficit, they caused the match to be interrupted. On three occasions, they threw smoke bombs on the field, causing the match to be definitively stopped after 75 minutes. In principle, the last quarter of an hour was to be played on Monday, but Beerschot ultimately decided to forfeit.

FATAL ACCIDENT

After the match, incidents also broke out outside the Bosuilstadion, requiring police intervention with a water cannon. But the biggest shadow over that day came later.

According to the Gazette of Antwerpa fatal road accident occurred on the sidelines of the derby. In Deurne, a drunk driver crashed into a stationary car at high speed.

A DRINKING DRIVER

At the time of impact, the occupant of the stationary car was chatting with two pedestrians nearby. One of the pedestrians tragically lost his life, while the other was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The occupant of the stationary car was also injured, and several other vehicles were damaged. The driver responsible for the accident was arrested after a positive alcohol test and will have to surrender his driving license for at least two weeks.

The Footnews editorial team presents its most sincere condolences to the family.
