The woman who was appointed by the New Popular Front for Matignon said on Tuesday, September 24, that she was “rather in favor” of the regularization of “all undocumented immigrants.” The First Secretary of the PS believes that only those who work should be regularized.
Lucie Castets had impressed the entire left this summer with her ability to embody the different sensibilities of the New Popular Front. But for the first time since the left-wing coalition designated her as its candidate for Matignon, the thirty-year-old has taken a position that is not shared by all the alliance’s partners. Interviewed on Tuesday evening, September 24, on BFM, the hesitant ENA graduate said: “rather favorable” to regularization “of all undocumented immigrants”.
“I’ll have to look into it. Next time I come, we’ll talk about it again so I can confirm this position,” Lucie Castets then added, specifying that she was speaking only in her own name. And corrected herself a few moments later by affirming “that there needs to be significant regularization of undocumented immigrants” without knowing whether it should be about “the whole” illegal immigrants.
On the same channel this Wednesday morning, the first secretary of the Socialist Party Olivier Faure explained “No [pas être] agree with this position, which is not ours.” “Our position is to say that we must put an end to a form of hypocrisy, to these women and men who keep the country standing, who work, who are often in conditions of exploitation, and these must be regularized. And that is what I stand for,” specified the head of the PS.
According to the Seine-et-Marne MP, “logic” is to get back illegal immigrants who are not working “to their country of origin.” But the divergence is not dramatic, insists Faure, assuring “that a disagreement can happen” within the left alliance.
