“Risk of collapse”, big boost to renovate this cathedral in Oise

This is a nice boost for the renovation of the cloister rood screen building of the cathedral of Noyonin Oise! This Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Heritage Missionled by Stéphane Bern and supported by the Ministry of Culture, and Française des Jeux have awarded a grant of 350,000 euros to the City of Noyon.

This place, a historic space located inside the cathedral of the city of Calvin, had been selected as an emblematic site 2024 of the Hauts-de- region by the Mission Patrimoine. Since then, it appears on the grid of the scratch game Mission Patrimoine 2024 of the FDJ.

Start emergency work

An amount that will allow the work to begin, and in particular the emergency worksin this building located in one of the first Gothic masterpieces in France, by the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025.

This support will enable the cathedral’s rood screen to be reopened to the public by securing it and restoring all of its framework, roofing and masonry.

Closed since 2023, the rood screen of the cloister of Noyon Cathedral benefited from emergency shoring in 2020.

It is in danger of collapsing

Several worrying aspects have been reported in this building, including the dissociation between the frame and the walls, “leading to water infiltration, and therefore weakening of the walls, increasing the risk of collapse »explained the Heritage Mission.

“The cathedral, built more than nine centuries ago and having suffered several attacks and degradations, has a real need restoration »reacted Sandrine Dauchelle, the mayor (LR) of Noyon, upon receiving this allocation.

According to the Heritage Mission’s schedule, the end of work on the rood screen building should not take place before the end of 2027.
