A man died on Tuesday August 8 in the Mont-Blanc massif. The 50-year-old unscrewed in the Goûter corridor, carried away by a rockfall.
A 54-year-old man, of Israeli nationality, died on Tuesday August 8, while descending from Mont Blanc, by the normal route.
The mountaineer was part of a group of six people. They were crossing the Goûter corridor without being roped when a rockfall occurred. The climber was then thrown off balance and unscrewed. He was carried 150 to 200 meters and did not survive the accident.
The Couloir du Goûter, at more than 3000 meters above sea level, is a must on the normal access route to Mont Blanc. The place is famous for these rock falls. It sometimes happens that guides make the decision to suspend the ascent of Mont Blanc due to this phenomenon, as was the case in July 2022.
But this summer, the teams of the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon of Chamonix indicate that very few rockfalls have been reported.
The conditions there are “relatively good because it snowed this weekend”continue the mountain rescue professionals. “Hence the randomness of this place”note the gendarmes.
This is the second death linked to this phenomenon in the Goûter corridor this summer.
