During the fourth quarter 2024 financial results interview, Spencer Wang, VP of Finance and Corporate Development, along with CEO Theodore A. Sarandos, commented on the impact of the release of Season 2 of Wednesday on fan social engagement.

Wang posed a question from KeyBanc’s Justin Patterson, who asked about the key steps to competing with short-form video platforms.

Sarandos explained that the goal is to “entertain all audiences, including young people who consume more short content.”

This led Sarandos to claim that the release of season 2 of Wednesday should cause “a flood of tributes on all social networks” regarding this new series of episodes:

“Our goal here is to entertain all audiences, including young people who often watch more content in short form. The beauty of the situation is that these people also enjoy movies and series. We strive to captivate them with projects that excite them and inspire them to interact on social media, create tributes. You will see as soon as this new season is released that all social networks will be flooded with feedback on this work.”

While the essence of Netflix remains in the “long-form professional story”the company is also interested in short form storytelling like “an excellent breeding ground for new narrators.”

“Our core business is professional long-form storytelling, which is a very important business area. However, as attention shifts to other formats, we want to be there too. I find that short-form content services are great places to discover new storytellers.”

Before this statement, Netflix was expecting great success with season 2 of Wednesday (you can read more about audience forecasts here).

Will season 2 of Wednesday be a success?

Although questions persist about when Season 2 will launch Wednesdayall indicators seem to point to it being one of Netflix’s most successful releases this year.

Only two other series in Netflix history (Squid Game season 1 and Stranger Things season 4) attracted more viewers in the first four weeks than Wednesday season 1. With the prolonged wait for season 2, it is therefore not surprising that these new episodes are eagerly awaited.

It’s also important to remember that stories surround major behind-the-scenes drama on this hit show.

Star Jenna Ortega reportedly expressed doubts about participating in the series after season 2, leading to speculation that she might stop this season. This will likely inspire many viewers to see how the plot could conclude.

Additionally, former actor Percy Hynes White was fired from the series following accusations of sexual assault (although he briefly appeared in a recent Netflix trailer). The increased sensitivity around this news arouses spectators’ curiosity as to how his absence will be handled.

The ground therefore seems well prepared for Wednesday remains one of Netflix’s biggest hits upon launch. Uncertainty nevertheless remains as to the precise release date of season 2.

Season 2 of Wednesday is expected on Netflix at some point in 2025.

In a world where content formats are evolving rapidly, viewer engagement on social media is becoming a central issue for streaming platforms. Fan reactions are now as important as the content itself. What consequences could this have on the future of audiovisual storytelling?
