MADRID – Beaten last weekend in Leganés (1-0), Atlético Madrid lost new valuable points in the race for the La Liga title on Saturday with a draw (1-1) against Villarreal, letting slip the opportunity to put pressure on his rival and current leader of Real Madrid.
Trailing from the 29th minute of play after a penalty caused and converted by the experienced Gerard Moreno (1-0), the Colchoneros returned to the game in the second half thanks to an opportunistic goal from Brazilian winger Samuel Lino (57th, 1-1).
They then failed to turn the tide of the match despite the entry into play of Antoine Griezmann and several chances at the end of the match.
-Atlético (2nd, 45 points), thus gives the opportunity to its rival and neighbor Real (1st, 46 points) to take the lead in the championship in the event of success in Valladolid (9 p.m.) and could see FC Barcelona (3rd, 39 points), come back three lengths.
This draw is, however, a good result for Villarreal (5th, 34 points), which remains in the race for the Champions League.
